CS4All K12 Teacher Workshop 2017
Are you interested in exploring how to bring computer science and programming into your school or classroom?
The Department of Computer Science at Michigan Tech with funding from Google is offering a computing workshop for K-12 educators and administrators, August 15-17, 2016. The workshop will be a starting point for this community of teachers across the Upper Peninsula, in conjunction with faculty and students at Michigan Tech.
If you have questions about the workshop, please contact Prof. Linda Ott at linda@mtu.edu.
CS4ALL at Michigan Technological University.
Facilitated by faculty of the computer science department at Michigan Technological University. CS4ALL is an ongoing outreach program. Many K-12 teachers are very interested in learning more about computer science. We have worked with teachers school districts across Michigan and the upper midwest to help integrate computer science in their classrooms. We hope that by engaging teachers our summer workshops, they will become better informed about the value of computing education and that this will lead to more fruitful partnerships with Michigan Tech and their schools.
Copper Country Coders
Copper Country Programmers (CCP) is an after school computer programming club for middle and high school students. Michigan Tech faculty and students volunteer their time to work with the young programmers, providing curriculum, tools, and classroom tutoring. This year we have over 50 participants from grades 5 through 9. These kids work in small groups to learn programming through a series of exercises exposing students to a variety of languages and topics, including Interactive Fiction, Computer Generated Poetry, Computer Art, Computational Geometry, Artificial Intelligence, and Video Games. Our curriculum has shown promise in attracting and retaining a diverse pool of students. Students have participated in computer programming competitions, computing conferences, and have duel-enrolled in Computer Science courses at Michigan Tech.
Women in Computer Science
Women in Computer Science (WiCS) is a summer program for high school women. It is a weeklong discovery of this fascinating field which is now an integral part of all aspects of our lives. Participants gain experience programming and explore different areas in this field, such as data mining, robotics, virtual reality, visualization, human computer interaction, and security. Students learn about the many career opportunities in computing and the excellent job prospects in a wide range of industries. They interact with alumni and role models to get firsthand accounts of the diverse careers in computing.
